I have been asked to write about sinusitis and what are the best natural remedies for Sinusitis that are guaranteed to help. Sinusitis pain and face ache across your cheekbone and up into your eyes and forehead is a very common condition, most people have experienced these symptoms at some point in their lives. Best not to rely on medication, there are natural remedies for Sinusitis.
Causes of Sinusitis
Sinusitis can be caused by:
*Nasal polyps tissue which grows in your nasal passage or sinuses
*Deviated nasal septum. Located in the wall between the nostrils, known to restrict or block nasal passages.
*Medical condition. Respiratory tract infection- the common cold-causing inflammation and thickening of the sinus membrane which blocks mucus drainage. Sinus Infections can be bacterial, viral, or fungal. You can read more about Sinusitis here.
* Allergies. Like hay fever, causing inflammation blocking the sinuses.
What are Sinuses?
Sinuses are hollow pockets inside the bones that surround the nose. Sinuses produce mucus, mucus drains the nasal passage, if the nose becomes swollen because of inflammation it will result in a blockage of the sinuses leading to pain, congestion, cough, post-natal drip, cough and face pain.
According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases should the Sinusitis become acute it can last for anywhere up to four weeks. Chronic Sinusitis can occur after a cold.
Sinusitis Risk factors
Nasal passage abnormalities- like nasal polyps or deviated nasal septum
Asthma- connected with chronic sinusitis
Sensitivity to Aspirin-can cause respiratory problems
A disorder (Auto-immune)- like cystic fibrosis or HIV
Exposure to cigarette smoke or other pollutants
Chronic Sinusitis Complications
- Meningitis. Meningitis can cause inflammation of the fluid and membranes around your brain and spinal cords.
- Infections. Infections of the bone or the skin can cause complications however this is rare.
- Loss of smell. Inflammation and nasal obstruction can cause temporary or permanent loss of smell to the olfactory nerve.
- Vision. Infection in the eye socket causes a reduction in vision.
Other Sinusitis Symptoms
- Decreased sense of smell
- Difficulty breathing
- Other Sinusitis symptoms
- Headaches
- Broken Sleep
- Pain in the top teeth on both sides of the mouth
- Pressure or pain behind the eyes
- Cheeks pain or pressure
- Post-nasal drip, but with yellow or green phlegm
- Snoring
- Stuffed nose, with green or yellow discharge
- Dry mouth, tongue, and lips due to breathing through the mouth at night
Chronic Sinusitis Diagnosis
Your doctor will do a face and nose examination to look for any tenderness.
Nasal passage endoscopy.
A fibre-optic flexible tube is inserted up the nasal passage which allows the doctor to see what’s going on inside the sinuses also known as Rhinoscopy.
- CT or MRI Scan
- An image is taken using a CT or MRI scan, this shows greater detail of the sinuses and nasal passage. This is especially useful in detecting deep inflammation or obstruction otherwise invisible using an endoscope.
- Culture
- Sinus and nasal cultures in general are unnecessary to diagnose chronic sinusitis, however, if the condition is worsening or fails to respond tissue cultures may help to determine if the cause is bacteria or fungi related.
- Allergy test
Allergy testing can be used if the doctor suspects that the Sinusitis may have been triggered by an allergy of some sort, if a skin allergy is suspected the doctor may order a skin allergy test.
Top 10 ways to relieve Sinusitis pain
I have long been an advocate of using natural ways or natural products to help with inflammation as many diseases are caused by inflammation so everybody has a choice, so here is a list of ten ways (some natural and some medical remedies to relieve Sinusitis)
1.My top tip is Serrapeptase (Serratiopeptidase). Serrapeptase has been used for over 30 years primarily to break up mucus and reduce inflammation, it is a natural remedy for Sinusitis and has been proven to get rid of Sinusitis, (My wife suffered for many years from face and head pain from blocked Sinuses, the Serrapeptase has helped her immensely) you can read more about Serrapeptase HERE.
This is what this customer said about Serrapeptase and Sinusitis
“Sinuses and nose feel completely clear!”
“Hi Robert
Hope all are well and thanks for your help so far. You’ve been far more help than even my ENT consultant/surgeon so far, to be honest. ? Well here I am 2 weeks in and report as follows:-
Sinuses and nose feel completely clear almost as if there was never anything wrong with them. I’ve lost a good half stone in body fat or thereabouts, my smell and taste are back to normal too it feels great!” Thanks for recommending Serrapeptase.
-Matt S.
2. Nasal irrigation using Saline. Nasal sprays or solutions help to reduce drainage and wash away allergies and irritants.
3. Anti-biotics. If your Sinusitis is caused by a bacterial infection it may be necessary to use antibiotics to clear up the infection.
4. Immunotherapy Immunotherapy or allergy shots may be used to reduce your body’s reaction to certain allergies that are contributing to your Sinusitis.
5. Steam bath or shower.
Try using hot water vapor to moisten your Sinuses, get some eucalyptus oil or menthol oil, and sprinkle a few drops in your shower or before having a hot steamy bath, this will assist to loosen up the debris and mucus build up inside your nose, or fill a pot or deep bowl with steaming water put a towel over your head and place your face into the bowl, breathe in the steam for about 10-15 minutes.
.6. Spicy foods
Some people swear that using spicy foods can help to clear the nasal passage, spicy foods like curry, horseradish, and mustard.
7. Corticosteroids (Oral or injected) These medications are recommended to relieve the inflammation caused by severe Sinusitis where nasal polyps are present. These corticosteroids are only used to treat extreme cases, they have serious side effects when used over a long period.
8. Drink lots of Water.
Keeping your body hydrated helps because your sinuses will be kept moist, drink lots of water throughout the day and avoid drinking coffee or alcohol as these can trigger the sinuses.
9. Surgery. In a case where every other treatment doesn’t seem to provide pain relief, an option would be endoscopic surgery. During this procedure, the doctor will use a flexible thin tube with a light (endoscope) attached to take a good look at your sinus passage. Depending on what is found e.g.: a polyp or tissue that is causing the blockage the doctor may enlarge the sinus opening to help with the mucus drainage.
10. Neti pots. I’m not a big fan of these because they don’t clear the sinuses, Neti pots use water which just loosens dry mucus at the sinus opening, and many of them have chemicals that may make the inflammation worse.

To my own observations and research, I think natural remedies for sinusitis are more effective that popping pills because I’ve read various testimonies about some but it’s not everyone that knows about them, thanks to this article, it’ll help people be more aware about Sinusitis and the natural remedies that are applicable for it. The most common of the remedies is that of taking a steam bath as it clears the mucus and this is done with that said of Menthol oil. The other remedies are really nice too but it’s kinda interesting that taking spicy food can be of help. Thanks for taking your time to help others, it’s much appreciated.
Hi,
Thank you for your kind comments,

This is really informative and helpful. It’s true that sinusitis can be chronic and result into really dangerous health conditions, I’ve been opportune to read some articles on some products reviews that claims to offer remedies to Sinusitis but their comments are really bad and discouraging. Thanks for sharing these natural measures, they are really good and very effective, I’m very conversant with steam bath, drinking a lot of water and also with taking spicy food. They should be of help to the people suffering from Sinusitis. Once again, you’ve done a great job putting this together.
Hi,
Thank you for your kind comments.

Thanks for this extensive post on natural remedies for sinusitus. I suffer from this a couple of times a year and the ideas and suggestions are ones that I can use very soon and often. Even if a couple of times a year does not sound bad, as you are going through the bouts, you remember once again why you abhor them.
The first suggestion on your list is one that I have used in the past with success. The Serrapeptase (Serratiopeptidase) simply works and was recommended to me some years ago by a friend who swore by it. He was right, at least for me. It helps a lot.
I will try several of the other suggestions you have too because there may be one that works better than what I am using now. It does not hurt to have a plan ‘B’ at the ready for the next attack. Super useful article and I have bookmarked. No doubt I will be back.
Hi Dave,
Glad to hear thayou have tried Serrapeptase and that it worked, it really is a super e.
Thanks for your comments.

Natural remedies are my favorite ways of treatment. I have also witnessed the clearing of sinuses by spicy foods. My sister was diagnosed with sinuses but by her like for spicy foods, she has been able to clear the the nasal passage. It is great that an element like the easily available water is also a great remedy. Thank you for these great suggestions. This is a very useful article.
Hi Carol,
Glad to help.
